Crystal Lake showrunner reveals his only rule for the Friday the 13th prequel

Brad Caleb Kane, the showrunner for Peacock's upcoming Friday the 13th series Crystal Lake, says he had just one guiding principle for the project.

The series brings back key franchise elements like Pamela and Jason Voorhees and the Camp Crystal Lake setting. However, per an exclusive interview with /Film, Kane noted the franchise's famously messy continuity freed him from strict rules.

"The only rule was that it's got to be a good time," Kane said. He described the original films as grisly but fun campfire stories, an energy he aimed to replicate.

He acknowledged the canon shifts, like Jason being retroactively added to the first film's events. "The series is pretty inconsistent in terms of canon... so there were really no parameters put on me in terms of what I could do," he explained.

Kane still plans to hit familiar beats for fans, including depicting the murders of the first two victims from the original movie. The show moves their 1958 setting to 1971, showing how the timeline is being reshuffled.

Crystal Lake begins streaming on Peacock on October 15, 2026.
