Early reviews blast Jessica Chastain's horror flick Other Mommy as a "disappointing" mess

The first reactions to Jessica Chastain's new horror-thriller "Other Mommy" are brutal, per reports from MovieWeb and JoBlo.

Preview screenings took place ahead of the film's October 9 theatrical release. Despite Chastain's star power and a promising premise, critics who saw the film are not impressed.

MovieWeb reports that The Jam Review called it "among the most disappointing horror films of the year" in a 1.5-star review, describing the film as an "excruciating parade of ineffective jump scares" and "woeful CGI" that turned into an "unintentionally hilarious endurance test."

Another 1.5-star review from Screen Space, cited by MovieWeb, called the film "ponderously paced" and "confusing." The AU Review gave it 2 stars, stating Chastain's talents were wasted on material that "gradually deteriorates into a disappointingly conventional, occasionally laughable supernatural exercise."

JoBlo's summary noted the early reactions were "underwhelming" despite creepy trailers. One of the few positive notices highlighted by MovieWeb came from Goldwin Reviews, which gave the film a 4-star score and called it "a feast for the soul that yearns for horror with substance."

Box office projections cited by MovieWeb suggest "Other Mommy" could open to around $20 million, which would be a strong start against its reported $18-19 million budget.
