Eddie Cahyono's 'Ibuku' lands sales rep ahead of Busan competition slot

Eddie Cahyono's 'Ibuku' lands sales rep ahead of Busan competition slot

The upcoming Indonesian drama "Ibuku" has secured a global sales agent, per an exclusive report from Variety. Asian Shadows will handle international rights for the film.

Director Eddie Cahyono's project has also been officially selected for the Competition section of the Busan International Film Festival. It stars veteran actress Christine Hakim and Ayushita Nugraha.

The story follows Sumiati, a widow in her 60s living alone in a Javanese village. Her life is upended when she learns her daughter, who works abroad, faces execution in Saudi Arabia after killing a man in self-defense. Sumiati then desperately seeks money to travel and see her daughter one last time.

The film is shot on 16mm and is based on Cahyono's research into the struggles of Indonesian migrant workers and their families. The producers include ANP Talenta Media from Indonesia and Japan's Knockonwood Inc. Isabelle Glachant and Li Xiaorong of Chinese Shadows in Hong Kong are serving as creative producers.
