Ernie Johnson announces his final season hosting 'Inside the NBA'
Ernie Johnson is calling time on his run as the host of 'Inside the NBA'. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he confirmed in an Instagram video that the current 37th season will be his last in the chair.
The veteran broadcaster said the call was 'totally my decision' and that 'it's just time.' He noted that while preparation has been a point of pride, he always vowed to step away if the job stopped being a joy. Johnson also cited recent health, including a 2025 heart bypass, as a factor, wanting more time for his family.
Charles Barkley had previously hinted at this move, stating last fall he planned to retire from the show alongside Johnson after the 2026-27 season. Johnson has hosted the program since 1990, working with analysts Kenny Smith, Barkley, and Shaquille O'Neal.
He won't disappear from screens entirely. Per the report, he will remain involved with TNT's NCAA basketball broadcasts and other projects. 'Inside the NBA' moved to ESPN after TNT lost its NBA rights, though TNT Sports still produces it.
TNT Sports issued a statement praising Johnson as 'the heart and soul' of the network and a 'legend,' adding they look forward to his next chapter with them.
