Gearbox asks Borderlands fans for input on the franchise's future

Gearbox is openly asking players what they want from the next Borderlands game. According to IGN, the developer is in the early stages of forming what it calls "an exciting overall direction" for the series and wants fan feedback to help shape it.

The studio confirmed, per both IGN and Eurogamer, that it is actively developing more content for Borderlands 4 to release next year. The plans include ongoing weekly events and group objectives for the community, though specific details on story expansions or characters were not shared.

In a blog post reported by the outlets, Gearbox posed direct questions to its community. The team asked which characters deserve more screen time, what story arcs need resolution, and where the franchise should go next. The studio emphasized it is "listening" and encouraged fans to share thoughts on social media and its Devcast show.

However, IGN notes that any major new game announcement is still far off, with Gearbox stating "big plans take time." The call for input comes as the company announced the Borderlands series has surpassed 100 million lifetime sales across all titles.

The backdrop to this future planning is Borderlands 4's own rocky path. Eurogamer and IGN report the game had a softer launch, partly due to significant PC performance problems, which led to the cancellation of a planned Nintendo Switch 2 version. Parent company Take-Two previously stated the team is prioritizing fixes and improvements for existing platforms.
