Insidious: Out of the Further scares up $3 million in Thursday previews
The latest Insidious movie is off to a solid start at the box office. Per Variety, Insidious: Out of the Further earned $3 million from Thursday night preview screenings. That's a stronger start than last week's horror opener, The End of Oak Street, which debuted to $21 million.
Variety reports the sixth Insidious film is now aiming for an opening weekend between $23 million and $27 million. That would put it comfortably in second place, behind the fourth weekend of the massive hit Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is expected to add $35 to $40 million.
While this opening would be lower than the $33 million launch of last year's Insidious: The Red Door, Out of the Further carries a modest $18 million production budget. As JoBlo notes, this low cost should make for a profitable weekend.
This weekend's other major opener is the Jason Statham action movie Mutiny. It pulled in $700,000 from its Thursday previews and is looking at a debut in the $8 to $10 million range. The comedy Spa Weekend, which had no Thursday screenings, is projected to open between $3 and $5 million.
