Insidious sequel nabs $3M in previews, Statham's Mutiny joins box office brawl
The latest 'Insidious' sequel is off to a solid start at the box office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 'Insidious: Out of the Further' pulled in $3 million from Thursday preview screenings ahead of its wide release.
Sony Pictures is estimating the horror film will scare up roughly $23 million in its opening weekend. The movie, which reportedly cost $18 million to make, is playing in about 2,700 theaters across North America.
This new installment stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and Lin Shaye in a story about a mother who can bring ghosts back to our world. It arrives one year after the previous franchise entry, 'Insidious: The Red Door,' which featured the return of original stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne.
Also new this weekend is the Jason Statham action film 'Mutiny.' Per the outlet, it earned $700,000 from Thursday previews. Lionsgate is releasing it in a similar number of theaters, with expectations in the high single-digit millions for its debut.
The box office champion is expected to remain 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' which is poised for its fourth straight weekend at number one. The film is on track to become the third highest-grossing domestic release ever.
