Insidious sequel scores $60 million global opening, ensuring more franchise films
The latest Insidious film, Out of the Further, pulled in a healthy $25.3 million domestically over its opening weekend, per /Film. It added another $35 million internationally for a global start of $60.3 million.
With a reported budget of just $18 million, the film is already set up for major profitability. The outlet notes it will easily clear $100 million worldwide.
While the movie earned a lousy C+ CinemaScore from audiences, the franchise's financial track record speaks louder. Every one of the six Insidious films has been a major moneymaker, collectively earning over $800 million globally against combined budgets around $60 million.
According to /Film's analysis, this success guarantees more movies. The planned spin-off starring Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani is likely to move forward, and a more direct Insidious 7 is also probable.
With Blumhouse struggling to launch new franchises and Sony eager for hits beyond Spider-Man, the studios are expected to keep milking this reliable cash cow. As long as audiences show up, new Insidious films will likely arrive every few years.
