Lilly Wachowski says new Matrix director wants her blessing for sequel
Lilly Wachowski says she isn't involved in Warner Bros.' plans for another Matrix movie, but that the director may need her approval before moving forward. Per TheWrap, Wachowski confirmed in a radio interview that Drew Goddard, who is developing the project, "doesn't want to go forward unless he gets our blessing."
Wachowski, who co-created the series with her sister Lana, said she and Lana might "stick our noses in a tiny bit" to decide whether to give that approval. She added that she's personally "kind of done" with the franchise, stating, "I don't want to play in that sandbox anymore."
The studio announced the fifth mainline Matrix film in 2024, with Goddard set to write and direct. The announcement noted that Lana Wachowski would have an executive producer role, but made no mention of Lilly's involvement.
Goddard previously told Variety he takes the responsibility seriously, feeling the weight of wanting to honor both the fans and the original creators. Development on the sequel has been quiet since its announcement two years ago.
