Lin Shaye's Personal Plea Saved Insidious 6 From Cancellation
Sony had removed Insidious: Out of the Further from its release plans after internal changes, effectively killing the sequel. But series star Lin Shaye refused to let it die.
Upon hearing the news, Shaye's immediate reaction was "F*** this," according to Variety. She then wrote a personal appeal to Sony's top film executive, Tom Rothman, pleading for the movie to be made.
Per both Variety and JoBlo, Shaye argued in her letter that the franchise's dedicated fans deserved another installment. Her persuasion worked, and Rothman agreed to greenlight the project.
The film opened in theaters and performed strongly. Variety reports it debuted with $25.3 million domestically, landing in second place at the box office. JoBlo adds that it has already grossed over $60 million worldwide.
Shaye told Variety that taking action was crucial. "It gives me chills because I don't consider myself a mover and a shaker," she said. "But I spoke up." She also shared that she feels happier than ever in her career.
The movie follows a new character named Gemma, who can astral project and accidentally bring demons back from the supernatural realm called the Further, as detailed by Variety. Shaye returns as Elise Rainier, the psychic guide who helps Gemma confront family trauma.
With a production budget of $18 million noted by Variety, the sixth Insidious film continues the franchise's trend of low-cost, high-return horror.
