Masters of the Universe flop racks up over a billion streaming minutes
The expensive fantasy remake 'Masters of the Universe' bombed in theaters this summer, but it's finding a much warmer reception at home. According to a new Nielsen report covered by Collider, the film exploded on Prime Video immediately after its streaming debut.
The data, which tracks viewing for a late-July window, shows the movie was watched for a staggering 1.17 billion minutes in its first few days on the service. Per JoBlo, that made it one of only two titles to cross the billion-minute threshold that week, landing it in the number one streaming spot.
The film, directed by Travis Knight and starring Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, hit Prime Video on July 22. This was less than two months after its underwhelming theatrical launch on June 5. The cast also includes Jared Leto as Skeletor, Camila Mendes, and Idris Elba.
While the movie was a major box office disappointment, its strong streaming performance is now sparking conversation. As JoBlo notes, this kind of post-theatrical life can sometimes influence the future of a franchise, drawing comparisons to past home video hits that spawned sequels.
