Matt Groening Says Futurama Will Rise Again After Latest Finale
Futurama's latest season finale aired Monday on Hulu, and there are currently no plans for a Season 15 as a regular series. However, creator Matt Groening is far from declaring the show dead.
Per Variety, Groening struck a defiant tone. "They can put us in a coffin. They can nail the lid shut, but they can't bury us. We will rise again," he said. "I guess I'm not too worried." The finale episode itself leans into the show's history of cancellations and revivals with the cheeky title "Final Ending: The Last Conclusion."
TVLine reports that while Hulu is not ordering more seasons, three supersized Hulu specials are still on the way. The first, a Christmas-themed installment featuring Robot Santa, is slated for 2027.
Groening teased to Variety that these specials will address long-running storylines. "Stuff that we have hinted at from the very beginning is finally paid off, and some unanswered questions for true fans will finally be answered," he said, though he remained mum on specifics for the other two episodes.
Futurama has a history of returns, having been revived by Comedy Central after its Fox run and again by Hulu in 2023 after a decade-long hiatus. Groening noted the team has "lots more stories to tell" and would love to make more.
