Ninja Theory Headed for Closure as Two Buyout Deals Fall Through
Hellblade developer Ninja Theory is on the path to closure after two separate acquisition agreements collapsed, per reports from multiple outlets.
Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty announced the news in a September 22 blog post, as reported by Eurogamer and Kotaku. The statement reads, "Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through. We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward."
According to Kotaku, Ninja Theory was one of several studios Microsoft was attempting to spin off this year. While others like Double Fine and Compulsion Games were successfully sold, Ninja Theory's fate remains uncertain.
Eurogamer notes the studio was actively developing a new entry in the Hellblade series, simply titled *Senua*, which was announced at an Xbox showcase in June. The blog post states the studio will now enter a consultation period regarding its proposed shutdown.
Push Square reports the developer had previously seemed safe from cuts following Microsoft's initial restructuring wave in July, having reportedly entered a partnership with an unnamed company. That deal has now fallen apart.
