Nintendo says remakes just as important as new games

Nintendo is doubling down on remakes, calling them just as important as creating new games. Per Eurogamer, the company’s senior vice president Nate Bihldorff stated in a new interview that “new games and remakes both have a place in the Nintendo stable, of equal importance to be honest.”

Bihldorff made the comments at the launch event for the Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. He acknowledged the fan desire for new titles but highlighted the value of revisiting classics, especially for players who never experienced the originals. For them, a remake like Ocarina of Time is a brand-new experience, he said.

The company has recent success to back this strategy. According to Eurogamer, the Star Fox remake has sold 1.17 million copies worldwide on Switch 2 since its launch earlier this year. The Ocarina of Time remake is also off to a strong start, with Bihldorff adding that the release pipeline for Switch 2 remains robust.

Meanwhile, Kotaku reports that players are already scouring the Ocarina of Time remake for hints about what’s next, specifically a potential remake of its sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Fans online are pointing to minor changes, like updated character models for the Skull Kid and Happy Mask Salesman, as possible teases.

For instance, some note that the Happy Mask Salesman in the Ocarina remake sports golden bangles he originally only wore in Majora’s Mask. Others cite an updated day-night cycle that now flows continuously, similar to Majora’s Mask. However, Kotaku notes that some of these “hints” are references to quests within Ocarina of Time itself.

Nintendo Life adds that with Star Fox and Ocarina of Time already out, the company’s run of classic remakes for Switch 2 seems to be just getting started.
