Other Mommy scares up $27.5M while The Social Reckoning flops with $5.5M

The weekend box office saw a tale of two new releases, with one horror movie triumphing and a major drama plummeting.
According to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, 'Other Mommy' dominated with a $27.5 million opening weekend. The Universal horror film, starring Jessica Chastain, easily beat studio expectations for its $19 million budget.
On the opposite end, Aaron Sorkin's 'The Social Reckoning' bombed hard. The Sony film, a follow-up to 'The Social Network', earned a dismal $5.5 million in its debut.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that 'Other Mommy' performed well despite a negative audience reaction, which the outlet claims included a poor grade on a rival survey. The outlet also states critics were harsh, but the film's buzz is credited to a popular trailer.
'The Social Reckoning', with a $30 million budget, reportedly landed far below the studio's own modest projections. The film stars Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White as a Facebook whistleblower and journalist.
