Sean Gunn Says He's Too Old to Play Rocket Raccoon Again
Sean Gunn says his days of scurrying around as Rocket Raccoon are officially over. The actor confirmed he has retired from performing the motion-capture reference for the Marvel character, per an interview with TheWrap.
Gunn, who turned 50, said the physical demands of the role have become too much. "I don't think that I could do the motion reference anymore for Rocket," he stated. "I think I'm too old."
The actor explained that the strain came not from his knees, but from his feet and ankles. He spent years in a catcher's crouch, pivoting on the points of contact with the ground for the role.
Gunn played dual roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy films: the live-action Ravager Kraglin and the mocap reference for Bradley Cooper's Rocket. He noted that Marvel hasn't called about a return, but he's stepping aside regardless.
"Give a younger actor a shot at it," Gunn encouraged. His future in superhero films lies elsewhere, having already played Weasel in The Suicide Squad and Maxwell Lord in the new DC Universe.
While Star-Lord is confirmed to return, the fate of Rocket Raccoon in the MCU remains unclear following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
