Spider-Man: Brand New Day stays on top with $39 million, nears domestic record
Sony's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" swung to another victory, per Variety, earning $39 million in its fourth weekend. The film's domestic haul has now reached $855 million, with a worldwide total hitting $2.22 billion.
According to TheWrap, the Marvel sequel is close to overtaking "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" as the highest-grossing domestic release of all time without adjusting for inflation. It's also the third-highest global earner in history.
Sony also claimed second place with "Insidious: Out of the Further." The horror sequel scared up $25.3 million domestically, for a global opening of $60.5 million, as reported by both outlets.
Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" held strong in third, adding $19.5 million in its sixth week. The film has now earned over $1.4 billion globally.
New releases struggled. Lionsgate's Jason Statham action film "Mutiny" opened with $7.4 million, while the comedy "Spa Weekend" debuted with just over $3 million.
