Spider-Man inches toward becoming the highest-grossing domestic film of all time
The Spider-Man juggernaut just won't quit. Per JoBlo, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" added $22.2 million domestically over the weekend, pushing its North American total to $891 million.
That leaves the wall-crawler only $45 million shy of toppling "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and its $936 million record to become the highest-grossing movie ever in the U.S. and Canada. The film also scooped up another $44 million overseas, bringing its global haul to $2.3 billion.
In a weekend surprise, Ketchup Entertainment's "Coyote vs. Acme" clawed its way to second place with $15.4 million. The film, famously rescued from Warner Bros.'s cancellation plans, outperformed expectations with a limited marketing push.
Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" held strong in third, dipping just 27% to $14.3 million for a $563 million domestic total. Ridley Scott's "The Dog Stars," however, bombed with an $8 million opening, spelling a likely major loss for Disney.
Rounding out the top five, "Insidious: Out of the Further" scared up $10.1 million, while Roadside Attractions' horror flick "Buddy" surprised with a $5.3 million take.
