Spider-Man poised to smash domestic record while Onslaught flops hard
Per JoBlo, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is swinging toward history. Early estimates show the superhero flick is set to pull in another $17.25 million over the holiday weekend, leaving it just $14 million short of becoming the biggest movie ever in the U.S.
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is projected to take second place with a $16.4 million haul, pushing its domestic total toward the $600 million mark.
Holdovers are showing serious strength. Coyote vs. Acme is sticking around with a mere 23% drop to $11.5 million, while the low-budget horror surprise Buddy is actually growing, adding 9% for a $5.9 million weekend.
New releases aren't having the same luck. The Mark Wahlberg action flick By Any Means is headed for a quiet $7 million start. Things are far worse for Adam Wingard's A24 film Onslaught, which is reportedly tracking for a disastrous $2.3 million four-day opening.
Even Lionsgate's Fall 2: Deadpoint is struggling, eyeing just $2.7 million. Both are getting beaten by the re-release of the iconic anime film Akira, which is on pace for a $3.5 million weekend.
