'Strange New Worlds' Finale Jumps to a Classic Trek Future, Producers Tease Final Season
The season four finale of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' sent Uhura on a time-jumping adventure that gave fans a direct look at the classic Enterprise. TVLine reports that in the episode, Uhura communicated with her future self a year ahead, sporting the iconic hairstyle from the original series.
The future scenario featured Paul Wesley's Captain Kirk at the helm and revealed a romantic relationship between Uhura and Scotty, a nod to their hinted history in the films. The present and future Uhuras worked together to save Scotty's life, with the episode serving as a major showcase for star Celia Rose Gooding.
According to TVLine's interview with co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, the finale was originally crafted as a potential series finale before a final season was secured. Goldsman stated the episode was a 'promissory note' to bring the show right to the edge of the original series timeline.
Myers explained that Uhura was chosen as the central character because she serves as an audience surrogate for new fans experiencing this era. The producers also confirmed that some elements, like a mystery surrounding what happened to La'an, were left open-ended to provide material for the upcoming fifth and final season.
Myers promised the final season will be 'more tonally cohesive' as the team thoughtfully works toward saying goodbye to the series.
