The season four finale of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' just delivered a glimpse of a spinoff that never was, per MovieWeb. The episode, titled 'Tomorrow's Enterprise,' jumps one year into a future where Captain Pike has been promoted, making way for James T. Kirk to command the USS Enterprise.
The installment features aesthetic tweaks pulling the crew's look closer to 'The Original Series,' and includes background details confirming the presence of Dr. McCoy and Scotty as chief engineer. According to the outlet, this future-set segment essentially serves as a live-action test for the pitched but rejected series 'Star Trek: Year One.'
That proposed show, focused on the early days of Kirk's famous five-year mission, was reportedly passed on by Paramount. Despite the on-screen proof of concept, the report states the studio's current direction is moving away from legacy characters like Kirk.
MovieWeb notes that the 'Strange New Worlds' sets have already been taken down, further dimming any hope for a 'Year One' revival. The franchise's upcoming film plans are said to involve entirely new characters in a fresh timeline corner, aiming for a more accessible entry point than a deep-cut prequel.
