Subnautica 2 adds co-op Buddy System update with proximity chat and revives
An update focused on multiplayer has dropped for Subnautica 2. Per IGN, the "Buddy system" 1.2 patch is now live, bringing new features designed for playing with friends.
The update includes a new proximity chat system, described by creative director Anthony Gallegos. As players move farther apart, the in-game voice chat will distort into a radio-like signal that eventually breaks up, which Gallegos said "adds to the tension."
Several new social and gameplay tools have been added. Players can now use emotes like clapping or cheering. A new inventory sharing system lets players directly swap items without dropping them. If a friend is downed, you can revive them by sharing oxygen. Two new player characters and suit colors have also been added for visual variety.
Other additions include a "tracking tag" beacon to help players locate dropped items or find their way back to a spot. HUD icons and pinned recipes have been streamlined to reduce visual clutter, and the base builder tool has been improved for clarity.
Gallegos noted this is just a portion of the 1.2 changes, with full patch notes coming. The same IGN video also offered a glimpse of the larger "Early Access 2" update, which will add a new region, story, progression, and vehicles.
