Ted Lasso Co-Creator Shoots Down Ted and Rebecca Romance Hopes
Brendan Hunt, co-creator and star of Ted Lasso, has a definitive answer for fans hoping for a romantic spark between Ted and Rebecca. In an interview with TVLine, Hunt stated the show's position is clear. "We've been pretty clear about what we think that relationship is, and it's not going to change," he said. "It's just not what the relationship is. Full stop."
The interview followed the show's sixth episode, which saw Rebecca rekindle her romance with Matthijs as the new year began. This came after Ted's ex-wife Michelle gave him her blessing to start dating again. Hunt noted that while Ted got permission he "didn't actually need," the bigger question is whether he is ready to let himself be loved.
Regarding Rebecca and Matthijs, Hunt said every relationship is fragile, but by the episode's end, they are "stronger than they've ever been." He indicated the show will explore if Rebecca is ready for a full commitment now that Matthijs is in London full-time.
The episode also featured the return of fan favorite Jamie Tartt, played by Phil Dunster. Hunt told TVLine it was intentional to hold off on such cameos to let the new women's team story establish itself first. He added that Jamie's return needed to service an ongoing plot rather than dominate an episode.
Another storyline saw Coach Beard misread signals from a younger woman, leaving him visibly stung. Hunt hinted that while the incident is never discussed again, its effects will be felt for the rest of the season.
