HBO's Harry Potter TV Series Has a $200 Million Starting Budget

The new Harry Potter TV show is kicking off with a $200 million price tag, according to TheWrap. The budget covers the initial setup for the series, which is being produced through the HBO-owned Plum Jam Productions.

Financial filings show the company's revenue was about $25 million in 2024 during the preparation phase, before ballooning to nearly $175 million in 2025 when filming began at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. The show is planned for seven seasons, with each season adapting one of J.K. Rowling's books.

The outlet notes that this upfront investment accounts for building sets and infrastructure to be used over the multi-season run. This includes constructing a school building for the young actors who will be part of the production for potentially the next decade.

A source cited by TheWrap indicated that the spending per episode will be in line with other major HBO productions. The network has not commented on the reported figures. While two seasons have been officially ordered, production on the second is set to begin this fall.

The series is scheduled to premiere on HBO and Max on Christmas Day.
