The Gilded Age cast breaks down Marian's shame and Gladys's nightmare in season 4

The Gilded Age season four premiere is here, and the cast has broken down some major twists for TVLine.
In the episode, Marian and Larry, whose relationship has been on pause, are finally drawn back together. After a storm forces them to share a hotel, they end up sharing a bed. Actress Louisa Jacobson, who plays Marian, explained the intense shame her character feels the next morning, telling TVLine that in 1886, a woman's reputation could be ruined by such an act.
Jacobson said the consequences are far higher for Marian than for Larry, and that her struggle is with the societal restrictions of the time, not just internal guilt. Harry Richardson, who plays Larry, said the pair are terrified of love but have "unfinished business" and a strong attraction that pulls them back together.
Meanwhile, in England, Gladys endures a traumatic childbirth that nearly kills her. Actress Taissa Farmiga told TVLine she was game for the heavy emotional arc, which sees Gladys's life saved but her uterus removed. The news is delivered to her husband first, a fact that co-star Carrie Coon called "wild" for its demonstration of how women were gatekept from information about their own bodies.
Back in New York, the newly married Oscar and Enid van Rhijn are scheming their way through society. Actor Blake Ritson told TVLine it's pure delight to play their partnership, as they see society as a game where they can rewrite the rules.
