A24's Elden Ring movie budget reportedly balloons to $200 million

A24's upcoming live-action adaptation of Elden Ring is shaping up to be a massive gamble for the studio. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the film's budget has reportedly ballooned to nearly $200 million.
Per Eurogamer, that makes it the most expensive film the indie-leaning studio has ever produced by a huge margin. Their previous record holder, Marty Supreme, cost an estimated $70 million.
Kotaku notes the budget is comparable to that of a Marvel movie, a major departure for a studio known for turning low-cost productions into hits like Backrooms. The Wall Street Journal report, which focuses on A24's growing influence, was cited by both outlets.
Alex Garland, who wrote and directed Civil War for the studio, is writing and directing the Elden Ring adaptation. The film is scheduled for release on March 3, 2028, and is being shot for IMAX. Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, and Nick Offerman are among the reported cast members.
Eurogamer adds that production is underway, with leaked set footage from a castle in Wales showing what appear to be human soldiers, hinting at a prequel story. The game, whose lore was co-written by George R.R. Martin, launched in 2022.
