Blizzard confirms Diablo 4 expansions are done as team shifts to Diablo 5
Blizzard has officially closed the book on major expansions for Diablo 4. According to reports from GameSpot and Eurogamer, the studio is now fully focused on developing the newly announced Diablo 5.
Diablo game director Brent Gibson confirmed the shift in an interview with PC Gamer, stating the team feels the "Story of Hatred" concluded with the last expansion. All future narrative development for the current game will be delivered through seasonal updates instead.
The next season, called Season of Hell's Legacy, begins on September 15. As part of the franchise's 30th anniversary, this update will feature the return of the iconic character Deckard Cain and a quest challenging players against the classic trio of major demons.
Gibson noted that the studio is exploring how to use these seasons to build continuity toward Diablo 5, which is set 100 years after the events of Diablo 4 and is scheduled for release in Spring 2029. He admitted the team is still figuring out the exact path forward based on player feedback.
In related news, a version of Diablo 4 containing all existing content will launch for the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15 as well. A new character class, the Amazon, is also slated to arrive in the game during the first half of 2027.
