Clayface previews haul in well behind Supergirl with $3.5 million

The DC Universe's latest horror gamble, Clayface, pulled in an estimated $3.5 million during its Thursday night preview showings, per reports from Collider and JoBlo. That early figure puts it roughly $4.3 million behind the $7.8 million preview haul for the studio's previous summer release, Supergirl, though Collider notes Supergirl's total included earlier Wednesday fan screenings.
While starting slower, Clayface carries a significantly lighter financial burden. Collider reports its production budget was $44 million, compared to Supergirl's reported $170 million, giving the horror film a much lower bar to clear for profitability.
The opening weekend picture is still forming, with early domestic forecasts cited by Collider placing Clayface's debut between $20 million and $25 million. However, JoBlo reports the film faces a challenge for the number one spot from Nathan Fielder's new movie, You Can See Everything.
Directed by James Watkins, Clayface stars Tom Rhys Harries as the disfigured actor Matt Hagen, with Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlyn Corr. The film is positioned as a Halloween-season horror outing, releasing just eight days before the holiday.
