Diablo 5 revealed with 2029 release date, sets players in a world Diablo already won
Blizzard pulled a hell of a surprise at BlizzCon 2026, officially announcing Diablo 5 with a planned release in Spring 2029. IGN reports the new mainline entry will arrive six years after Diablo 4.
According to coverage from PC Gamer and VGC, the game’s setting is a radical departure. The story jumps a full century past the events of Diablo 4 into a post-apocalyptic Sanctuary where the Lord of Terror has already claimed victory. Per VGC, Diablo 4 director Joe Shely stated, “The heroes are gone, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won.”
Shely elaborated, as reported by PC Gamer, that players will enter a world where Diablo has already taken over. There will be no towns or safe havens to retreat to, fundamentally changing survival and progression. Production director Tiffany Wat framed the core question as, “what must you become when the world has already fallen?”
A teaser shown at the event, described by IGN and PC Gamer, depicted a grim, fiery landscape. The brief footage showed proselytizing peasants, crucified angels, and a final glimpse of Diablo himself wreathed in flame.
BlizzCon also brought other Diablo news. IGN notes the Amazon class pack is coming to Diablo 4 in 2027, and the game is headed to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15, per VGC. A Netflix animated series based on Diablo was also announced.
