Double Fine lays off 23 staff after regaining independence from Microsoft

Double Fine lays off 23 staff after regaining independence from Microsoft

The Psychonauts studio Double Fine Productions has laid off nearly a quarter of its staff just weeks after breaking away from Xbox. According to reports from GameSpot and others, 23 employees have been let go, a move studio head Tim Schafer described as necessary for the studio's survival.

Schafer said in a social media post, per GameSpot, that the decision was "not taken lightly." VGC reports the layoffs were deemed necessary following the developer's departure from the Microsoft ecosystem.

This news comes roughly a month after Xbox's announcement of massive cuts across its gaming division. As noted by Rock Paper Shotgun, Double Fine's split was part of a broader wave that saw several other studios also changing hands or going independent.
