European Commission approves Saudi Arabia's $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts

The massive, controversial sale of gaming giant Electronic Arts has cleared a major hurdle. The European Commission has officially approved the $55 billion acquisition, per reports from GameSpot and Eurogamer.

The deal, which is structured as a leveraged buyout, would see EA sold to a consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). Private equity firm Silver Lake and Jared Kushner-founded Affinity Partners are also part of the investor group.

Rock Paper Shotgun reports that the EU body has ruled the deal does not "raise competition concerns," clearing the path for what is described as the largest private leveraged buyout of all time. The approval was widely expected, and now it's official.
