Valve developer accidentally mentions rumored Half-Life 3 codename HLX

Valve developer accidentally mentions rumored Half-Life 3 codename HLX

A Valve developer may have just given the internet's longest-running rumor a fresh breath of life. During a Q&A panel at the GameSoundCon conference, Valve music designer Mike Morasky was discussing the studio's approach to high dynamic range audio systems. Per IGN, Morasky noted that the upcoming game Deadlock uses its own version, "and HLX uses its own kind of HDR."

The mention of "HLX" sent fans into a frenzy, as the acronym has long been rumored to be the internal codename for Half-Life 3. According to PC Gamer, dataminers have previously found references to HLX in Valve-related files, and it has never been linked to any other known project.

Morasky's colleague on the panel, David Feise, reportedly reacted immediately. PC Gamer reports that Feise turned to Morasky and whispered "nice work" or "nice one," a moment many interpreted as Feise calling out the accidental slip. Video of the panel shows Feise later leaning in to say, "Good job, you only said HLX once," suggesting this wasn't the first time the subject had come up.

The slip-up is the first time a Valve employee has been recorded publicly mentioning HLX. While it confirms HLX is a real, active project at Valve, it doesn't confirm it's Half-Life 3. As GameSpot summarized, the mention alone has been enough to make people online believe the long-awaited sequel might finally be in development.

Fans will have to keep waiting for an official announcement. But for now, a simple three-letter acronym has once again proven it can shake the gaming world.
