Report: Gears of War: E-Day Cost $500 Million

The upcoming Gears of War: E-Day might be one of the priciest games ever made, with new reports pegging its development budget at a staggering $500 million. The figure was first reported by Kotaku, which cited sources saying the cost does not include marketing expenses.

Chris Dring of The Game Business also reported the number today. Jez Corden of Windows Central added weight to the claim, stating the $500 million figure is not wrong, though his own sources couldn't confirm if that covered the budget alone.

The massive reported budget makes a separate reported decision by Microsoft even more surprising. According to Push Square, the company canceled a nearly complete PlayStation 5 version of the game at the last minute. The outlet suggests this move is especially puzzling given the game's astronomical development cost.

Per Kotaku's reporting, the sources described the budget as "eye-watering." The game is a return to the series' origins, focusing on the original Emergence Day that started the Locust war.
