First look reveals Meryl Streep's Aslan in Greta Gerwig's Narnia film
Empire magazine has revealed the first official image of Aslan from Greta Gerwig's upcoming Netflix film "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew." The lion, a central figure in C.S. Lewis's series, will be voiced by Meryl Streep, marking the first time a woman has taken on the role.
Per the outlet, Streep's Aslan sports a different look from previous versions. The design features a red stripe across the face and differently colored eyes, which Empire reports is Gerwig's nod to musician David Bowie.
Gerwig explained her casting choice to Empire, saying she sought someone "profound but not pretentious" with "gravitas" and the capacity for "fresh wonder." She noted she wanted an actor over 70 with wisdom, adding "that list is not a long one."
The film's path to theaters has seen some drama. After the success of "Barbie," Gerwig pushed for a theatrical release, which led to clashes with Netflix, per /Film's report. The streamer eventually agreed to an IMAX run.
The release date has shifted from a planned Thanksgiving 2026 debut to around Valentine's Day 2027. It will have a wide IMAX release before eventually streaming on Netflix.
"The Magician's Nephew" is a prequel to "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and has never been adapted for the big screen before, despite past attempts.
