James Gunn says The Suicide Squad is now the first official DC Universe movie

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has officially changed the starting point for his new shared universe. Per ScreenRant, Gunn confirmed on his podcast that his 2021 film The Suicide Squad is now considered the first canon movie in the DC Universe.

He made the declaration while discussing the film's place in the continuity with cast members Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee. Gunn said the film and the first season of Peacemaker were originally part of the old DCEU, but the reboot has allowed them to be folded into the new DCU timeline.

When asked if the movie was fully canon, Gunn said there is one small asterisk regarding the future of Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie. He asked fans for a little leeway on that point. Beyond that, he stated the entire film fits. "I think that we can actually say that yes, not only is The Suicide Squad canon, but it’s the first canon film in the DCU," Gunn said, according to the outlet.

The director also addressed timeline questions, telling fans to "chill out a little bit" because it's impossible to make everything line up perfectly. He noted that movies are meant to take place around their release dates, which may require adjusting The Suicide Squad's story timeline to fit, particularly a plot point about a character shooting Superman.
