Keanu Reeves steps into Netflix's 'Maelstrom' after Alan Ritchson exits

Keanu Reeves is taking over a lead role in a new Netflix action film after the original star bowed out. Variety first reported that Reeves will now headline 'Maelstrom,' replacing 'Reacher' actor Alan Ritchson.

According to the trade, Ritchson had been lined up for the project but left for undisclosed reasons. The 'Reacher' star has a film deal with Netflix and recently starred in the streamer's 'War Machine.'

Director Jaume Collet-Serra, who helmed the recent film 'Carry-On,' is set to direct. MovieWeb, also reporting the story, describes the plot as having a 'Die Hard'-esque setup.

The film follows a Federal Marshal who must protect the fiancée of an arms dealer as she enters witness protection. Their situation becomes dire when they are trapped by a hurricane and forced to fend off the criminal's goons.

Netflix has not announced a release date for 'Maelstrom.'
