Lanterns Showrunner Details Guy Gardner's Role and Long-Term Series Plan
Lanterns co-creator Chris Mundy has opened up about the gritty HBO series’ long-term vision and the introduction of Guy Gardner. In an interview with Collider, Mundy discussed the balancing act between the show’s True Detective-esque tone and its comic book elements, noting they aimed to ground the story in western Nebraska before slowly layering in the fantastical components.
A key part of that plan involved bringing Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner into the fold. Mundy told Collider they knew early on they wanted Gardner in the show to help establish the 2026 timeline after Hal Jordan’s departure. While James Gunn played the character for comedy in Superman, Mundy said they felt licensed to take him “one step further” in Lanterns, especially given his adversarial first meeting with John Stewart.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Fillion, who elaborated on his corporate-sponsored version of the hero. He described Guy as a guy with his “finger on the pulse” of both superheroics and business, needing corporate sponsorships to fund goals like opening his own bar. Fillion also teased his next appearance in the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow, suggesting it will explore more of who Lex Luthor is.
Meanwhile, a recap from MovieWeb notes that Episode 6, set in 2026, shows John Stewart developing panic rooms in response to the destructive Superman vs. Lex Luthor fight referenced in the scene. The episode also confirms that Starro the Conqueror, the villain from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, exists in this DCU timeline.
