Marvel's Wolverine Is Drawing Heat For Its 'Fart Gas' Handholding

Marvel's Wolverine Is Drawing Heat For Its 'Fart Gas' Handholding

Reviews for Marvel's Wolverine have begun to drop, and a surprising focal point has emerged: a green trail players must follow, which some critics are derisively calling 'fart gas.' According to Kotaku, this trail is part of a broader debate about the PS5 game's perceived tendency to heavily guide players.

A clip from YouTuber Skill Up's review has sparked much of the discussion. In the clip, he details multiple layers of signposting in a snowy forest level. The first is the green scent line, or 'fart gas,' left by Jean Grey. On top of that are objective markers, environmental lighting, and character dialogue, all funneling players along a specific path.

Some players online have countered that many of these guiding features can be toggled off in the game's settings. However, both The Washington Post's Gene Park and Kotaku's Kenneth Shepard confirmed that the signature green scent trail cannot be disabled, at least in the pre-launch version they reviewed. Park noted the 'fart gas particles' remained visible even with other navigation assists turned off.

The debate, as reported by Kotaku, reflects a broader frustration some have with modern blockbuster games that feel overly 'on-rails' and unwilling to trust players to explore or figure things out on their own. The discussion has overshadowed other aspects of the game ahead of its September 15 launch.

Insomniac's marketing director has reportedly commented on the sudden surge of scrutiny, though the outlet did not provide the full statement. For now, the green trail is a permanent fixture, and it's become the unlikely center of the pre-release conversation.
