Mason Thames Officially Cast as Robin in DC's Animated Dynamic Duo

Mason Thames, star of "The Black Phone" and the live-action "How to Train Your Dragon," has been officially cast as Dick Grayson, the original Robin. The news comes from DC Studios co-head Peter Safran, who confirmed the role to /Film and Collider. Safran noted Thames was obsessed with the part, saying the actor "auditioned the shit out of it" and is a huge DC fan.

Thames will voice the character in the animated film "Dynamic Duo," which is set for release on September 22, 2028. Per Polygon, the movie will tell the origin stories of both Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, the second Robin, using a unique animation style from Swaybox Studios that blends puppetry and CGI.

Logan Kim has been cast as Jason Todd, according to reports confirmed by the outlets. The cast also reportedly includes Lee Pace and Steve Buscemi as members of the villainous Red Hood Gang.

A key question remains whether Thames and Kim will also play their characters in live-action DC projects. James Gunn, DC Studios' other co-head, has previously stated that actors will portray their characters across films, TV, and animation within the DC Universe. However, /Film notes that Gunn has also confirmed "Dynamic Duo" will not be part of the main DCU, classifying it as an "Elseworlds" story, which may affect that plan.

While past examples like Frank Grillo playing Rick Flag across multiple mediums suggest a path for Thames, nothing is officially confirmed for live-action. As /Film points out, DC's plans have shifted before, leaving the final answer up in the air.
