Netflix and Sega announce Crazy Taxi film, new Sonic series, Stranger Than Heaven movie
Netflix and Sega are teaming up for a multi-project deal that will bring several game franchises to the screen. The first cab off the rank is a feature film based on the chaotic driving game Crazy Taxi, per Variety.
The comedy movie will be penned by screenwriters Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. They most recently wrote the 2025 revival of The Naked Gun. Producers include Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film, alongside Sega's Toru Nakahara.
Two other adaptations are also in the works. A new animated Sonic the Hedgehog kids' series is in development, described by Sega as a "high-voltage" and "comedic" show for an upper pre-school audience. Additionally, a film based on the upcoming action-adventure game Stranger Than Heaven is planned.
According to a statement from Netflix executive Brandon Riegg, the partnership aims to leverage Sega's beloved characters and worlds. Sega's head producer Toru Nakahara promised something "hilariously crazy" for Crazy Taxi, "cute yet cool" for Sonic, and a "badass action drama" for Stranger Than Heaven.
The Crazy Taxi game first hit arcades in 1999. A new entry, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, is scheduled for 2027. The Stranger Than Heaven game, from the Yakuza series studio, is set for release in January 2027.
