Netflix Cancels 'Sweet Magnolias' After Five Seasons
Netflix has pulled the plug on its drama series 'Sweet Magnolias', per The Hollywood Reporter. The show's fifth and final season debuted just three months ago.
The series, which followed three best friends in a small Southern town, saw its viewership decline in its later years. According to Netflix's own data, the last season only managed to stay in the global top ten list for a few weeks.
While the show is ending, its creative team is already moving on. Sheryl J. Anderson, who served as showrunner, and lead actress JoAnna Garcia Swisher are developing a new project for the streamer.
The new series, titled 'Ladies of the House', is adapted from a book written by Lauren Edmondson. It will focus on a wife and her two daughters who must take over the family winery after a sudden death. Anderson will run the show, and both she and Garcia Swisher will serve as executive producers.
In a statement, Anderson said she was "thrilled to be embarking on this new adventure" with her 'Sweet Magnolias' colleague and Netflix.
