Robopocalypse TV series revival set with Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman

The robots are getting a second chance at world domination. Per The Hollywood Reporter, a television series adaptation of the 2011 novel 'Robopocalypse' is now in development, with Ron Howard attached to direct the pilot and Akiva Goldsman set to write it and serve as showrunner.

The project is a revival of a concept that once had Steven Spielberg eyeing it for a major film. Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment is now on board as an executive producer for the TV version. The book was famously optioned by Spielberg before it was even published, with a movie script drafted by Drew Goddard and stars like Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth attached at various points, but the film was postponed indefinitely in 2014.

The series will be developed by Imagine Entertainment and Weed Road. The logline describes a future where humanity's own technology turns against it, launching a devastating attack at 'Zero Hour' and forcing the scattered survivors to unite and fight back.

In a statement obtained by THR, Howard said the story's 'thought-provoking themes and humanity' drew him in, calling the future it presents 'startling and increasingly plausible.' He also noted his excitement to work with Goldsman again, a longtime collaborator dating back to their Oscar-winning work on 'A Beautiful Mind.'

No network or streaming service is currently attached to the project.
