Netflix Plans Live-Action Crazy Taxi Movie and New Sonic Animated Series
Netflix has revealed plans for three new video game adaptations from Sega, per an IGN report. The projects include a live-action comedy based on the chaotic driving game Crazy Taxi, a new animated series starring Sonic the Hedgehog, and a live-action movie for RGG Studio's upcoming title Stranger Than Heaven.
According to a Netflix executive, the streaming giant is banking on established fanbases and beloved characters. Brandon Riegg commented that great games already have "characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up."
Sega's leadership expressed confidence in the partnership. President Shuji Utsumi stated Netflix's dedication to craft across formats made them proud to collaborate. Producers from the Sonic film franchise are attached to the Crazy Taxi project, which will be written by the team behind the upcoming Naked Gun reboot.
Sega's Toru Nakahara teased the different tones for each adaptation. The Sonic series aims to be "cute yet cool," Crazy Taxi should be "hilariously crazy," and Stranger Than Heaven is pitched as a "badass action drama." Producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher described the Crazy Taxi film as being for fans who spent hours playing the classic Dreamcast game.
