Practical Magic 2 tops UK box office, dethroning Spider-Man
Per Variety, Practical Magic 2 has taken the number one spot at the UK and Ireland box office. The Warner Bros sequel conjured £2.7 million, which is about $3.7 million, in its opening weekend. This ended the six-week reign of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
In second place, Disney's Oasis documentary, titled Don't Look Back in Anger, earned $3.5 million. A new thriller from 20th Century Fox called Pressure opened in third with $2.7 million.
The long-running hit The Odyssey held fourth place in its ninth week, adding $1.2 million. Spider-Man: Brand New Day slipped to fifth, but its total haul of $132.7 million has now made it the third highest-grossing film of all time in that region.
According to a separate report from /Film, the sequel's domestic opening was $30 million, below earlier projections. With an additional $16 million from international markets, its global start sits at $46 million against a reported $75 million budget.
The outlet suggests the film could hold as counterprogramming in the weeks leading to Halloween, especially for female audiences. While critics panned it, audience scores are high. Warner Bros may be counting on strong post-theatrical performance on VOD and streaming to justify the sequel.
