Tom Rhys Harries recalls grueling screen tests for 'Clayface' lead role

Actor Tom Rhys Harries had a specific demand when testing for the lead in the DC Universe film 'Clayface': he didn't want to know who his competition was. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harries was up against four other actors for the titular role and told his agent not to reveal their identities to keep his focus pure.

Harries then endured a three-hour screen test for Warner Bros. and director James Watkins. Feeling good after the test, he finally asked who the other contenders were. The studio then called him back for a second, unexpected test. He landed the part just days later.

The actor, now 36, reflected on being a riskier choice for the studio compared to the other actors who had a proven track record leading films and handling press tours. He noted they had a 'proof of concept' that he lacked at the time.

Once on set, Harries found the scale of the production made it easier, not harder, due to the large support system around him. He expressed gratitude that the film has been well-received, acknowledging the work of his dialect coach, trainer, and agents.

Harries says he's not getting caught up in the idea of a 'big break' but wants to continue working with creators he fundamentally backs.
