Resident Evil Director Open to Sequel and Crossover with Games
Director Zach Cregger is warming up to the idea of a sequel to his recent Resident Evil movie, and even a crossover with the video game characters, per MovieWeb.
Cregger previously called his film a one-off story, but he told MovieWeb he's now open to exploring where the story could go next. He specifically mentioned the potential for a "really funny" crossover between his film's protagonist, Bryan, and the iconic game character Leon S. Kennedy.
Cregger told the outlet, "Going forward, who knows, dude? I'm totally not opposed to it." He clarified that such a crossover isn't confirmed, but said it's "not off the table."
The film ends with Bryan transforming into a monstrous creature after being infected. A potential sequel could see Leon encountering and dispatching this monster.
Despite his new openness, Cregger remains firm on his creative terms. He told Deadline he won't direct another franchise film if it means servicing established lore over his own vision. He said he only made Resident Evil because he was enthusiastic about the games and his own story.
If a sequel happens, it would likely continue his original approach rather than adapt existing game plots. However, it's not an immediate priority, as Cregger is currently developing two other films.
