Resident Evil Reboot Eyes Huge $45 Million Opening Weekend
Theaters are looking to the new Resident Evil movie to wake up the late summer box office, per Variety.
Sony's fresh take on the zombie franchise is tracking for a domestic debut between $40 million and $50 million. Some rival studios and tracking firms reportedly think it could even approach $60 million.
Director Zach Cregger, who previously helmed the hit film Weapons, is behind this reboot. The new movie stars Austin Abrams, who plays a delivery driver caught in the middle of a monster virus outbreak in Raccoon City.
This is the latest attempt to restart the film series, following a poorly received 2021 movie. The previous films in the original Milla Jovovich-led series all opened around $20 million, so this new release is poised to be the franchise's biggest opening yet.
With no other major releases this weekend, the movie is a lock for the number one spot at the box office.
