Sony kills The Last of Us Part 2 PC multiplayer mod ahead of launch
A fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II on PC is dead, shut down by Sony just before its planned release. According to IGN, modder Speclizer announced on social media that they received a letter from Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting the project not be released.
The mod, which had been in development since January, was set to launch this month. Speclizer shared a 25-minute gameplay video in June and had been accepting funding through Patreon, a detail both IGN and Push Square noted likely drew Sony's attention.
Push Square reports the mod aimed to recreate a classic multiplayer experience similar to the Factions mode from the first game. It would have let players battle across maps from the campaign using characters from The Last of Us Part II.
This cancellation stings for fans still mourning the loss of Naughty Dog's own official multiplayer project, The Last of Us Online, which was cancelled in 2023. Speclizer said they are now moving on to work on an original project.
