Steven Spielberg's gory 80s flicks forced the creation of PG-13
Forget directors, Steven Spielberg can claim credit for inventing a whole movie rating. According to ScreenRant, two of his graphic 1980s films freaked out parents so much they exposed a major gap in the system.
The violent content in those early Spielberg movies sat in a weird space between the kid-friendly PG rating and the restrictive R. The parental panic over what kids were seeing directly led to the creation of the PG-13 rating we know today.
So next time you see that familiar PG-13 logo, you can thank Spielberg for scaring the MPAA into making a whole new category.
