Survey Says Over 85% of Japanese Game Devs Now Use Generative AI

Survey Says Over 85% of Japanese Game Devs Now Use Generative AI

A new industry survey from Japan reveals generative AI has become a standard tool in local game development studios. According to Push Square, a report from the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association shows 85.8% of developers now use some form of the tech.

That figure marks a dramatic jump from just a year ago. In 2025, the same survey found only 51% of developers were using AI tools.

The report notes that major publishers, including household names such as Capcom and Square Enix, contribute data to the CESA. Other industry giants like Sega, Konami, and Koei Tecmo are also represented.

When asked how they apply the technology, most developers claimed they avoid direct use of AI-generated assets. Instead, they reportedly focus on using AI to streamline production and improve efficiency.

Debates continue over the ethics of AI trained on existing creative works, but the survey data suggests its adoption is only accelerating across Japan's game industry.
